American Horror Story really rolled the dice last season with a completely new concept and not just a classic horror trope. It ended up being my least favorite season, but I did appreciate that they were trying to shake things up in their 6th season. Season 7 is a new concept as well, drawing from the terror surrounding the current divisive nature of our country. It is hard to judge a season based on one episode, but I do have some thoughts.
I’ve seen some criticism of how the characters are actually caricatures. I don’t disagree, but I don’t think that is a valid criticism for this show. EVERY season has had characters that were caricatures. This show has always based its characters off of tropes and gradually added emotional attachments to them. This is not a show based in reality and never has been.
I do like the election aspect because there are a lot of people that were afraid and it was probably the two most despised candidates we have had running against each other. What I don’t understand is why the clown aspect is needed. This is kind of like when there were randomly aliens in the Asylum season. Are they trying to cash in on the It remake? Is it inspired by the clown phenomenon from a year or two ago?
The first episode was definitely disturbing and weird. I’m looking forward to seeing where they decide to go the rest of the season.
