I was excited when I saw the trailer for The Handmaid’s Tale on HULU, but I had sadly never read the classic novel. When it comes to novel adaptions, I kind of have a weird obsession with reading the book first. I still have not started the show, but I did recently read the novel and enjoyed it thoroughly.
The novel encompasses so many themes while providing tension and suspense throughout. There is such a great juxtaposition between how an event is viewed when looked at as a moment in history versus an individual’s actual experience. The novel is probably known mostly through the lens of feminism, but there is so much more to it. It covers how effective terrorism can be, how dangerous religion can be, and how dehumanizing class systems are. If you have never read it, I highly recommend it!
Speaking of The Handmaid’s Tale, Wattpad is running a contest to write a 500 word original story based off of the themes of the book. The winners will be in an anthology curated by Margaret Atwood herself. You can click on the cover above to check out my entry.
