READ THEN WATCH: THE GIRL WITH ALL THE GIFTS

Last year one of my favorite books that I read was The Girl With All the Gifts by M.R. Carey. Recently, I watched the movie based off the book that Carey also wrote the screenplay for. I can’t recommend both of them enough, but I will say that reading the book, then viewing the movie is the way to go. I actually didn’t put a link to the movie on here because the cover might be too revealing.

I cannot speak too much about the story without giving away things, but there are a few things I will say. First off, this book turns the horror genre on its head and creates something truly original. There has never been this type of story told in this way. It is very character driven.

As far as the movie goes, I was very impressed with how well it was done. Whenever a book blows you away, you wonder how the movie will handle it. I think the movie did a great job of exploring the story and characters that made the book great. Young actress Sennia Nanua is fantastic as the main character Melanie. The rest of the cast, including veteran actors Paddy Considine, Gemma Arterton, and Glenn Close, is excellent as well.

If you like genre fiction that is character driven and rises above its genre’s conventions, definitely read and then watch The Girl With All the Gifts.

    1. Yes! It had a limited release in February and just recently came out on DVD/Streaming. The movie is heartbreaking! Obviously no movie usually lives up to the books it’s based on, but it is really well done. Check it out and thanks for the comment!
