BETTER CALL SAUL SEASON 3

spoilers

Much like Doctor Who, the new season of Better Call Saul snuck up on me and I had to catch up on the first two episodes one after another. This show continues to be one of the best on TV and while some may call in sacrilege, I think it is just as good as Breaking Bad.

Speaking of Breaking Bad, one of the major aspects of this season is the overlap into the story told in Breaking Bad. I loved the way they introduced Gus.  In the scene, you could see him out of focus over Bob Odenkirk’s shoulder and the tension just continued to build. Knowing every thing about Gus already, it makes his facade of caring fast food manager even more disturbing.

Speaking even more of Breaking Bad, Mike Ehrmantraut was my favorite character on Breaking Bad and continues to be intriguing on Better Call Saul. The character is so complex because you really feel like he is a good guy at heart. However, he is able to do some very dirty things in order to uphold what he thinks is right. Every time there is focus on him, he just exudes this calm, methodical persona in tense situations, while I’m nervous the whole time wondering what is going to happen.

Even though I have spoken a lot about Breaking Bad characters, this show really stands on its own merit and has created some amazing characters of its own. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a character like Charles McGill on TV before. His fear?/illness? concerning electricity could be seen as gimmicky if it wasn’t written so well by Vince Gilligan and performed so well by Michael McKean. I find myself really disliking him, but when I actually analyze things, he really hasn’t technically done anything wrong and has been wronged himself. I love when characters elicit a reaction like that.

The other character that I really love is Kim Wexler. She is not just a 1 dimensional female character. She is fully formed as an intelligent, strong, and loyal person. I feel like Kim is the moral compass of the show. I could also go into a how long spiel about Saul, but we already know how awesome Bob Odenkirk is.

There are so many great things about this show, but I think what makes it stand out for me is that it is very confident in its storytelling. The show never rushes things and is very deliberate with details and loose ends. The way it foreshadowing and connections it employs is used perfectly. This is definitely one of the best shows on TV and I can’t wait to see what unfolds tonight!
